Catcher Rule for 6 & Under Swimmers

Dear 6 & Under Families,

As we prepare for our first meet, we wanted to provide some clarification regarding the "catcher rule" for our youngest swimmers.

During regular season meets:

  • In the 42' Freestyle event, swimmers are allowed to have catchers at the end of the pool.
  • During the 25 Freestyle and 25 Backstroke events, catchers are permitted to be in the water lane with the swimmer.
    • Catchers must keep their hands above the water at all times.
    • If a catcher touches or assists the swimmer in any way during the race, the swimmer will be disqualified (DQ'd).

Please note that the rules are different for the SSA Championship Meet:

  • There is no 42' Freestyle event at SSA Champs.
  • Catchers are not permitted during the 25 Freestyle or 25 Backstroke events.

If your swimmer uses a catcher during practice, we encourage families to help them build confidence swimming independently throughout the season and on their own so they are prepared for the championship meet, where catchers are not permitted.

If you have any questions about the catcher rule or meet procedures, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you,

Paul and Stephanie
